Mentoring helps people to maximize their potential, develop their skills and improve their performance. It actually helps each learner to be the person he or she wants to be. Mentoring is a gentle nudge in the right direction at the right time and the learner needs to seek out his or her own mentor.
Mentors need to be available, analytical with the information they are getting from their mentee, and active listeners. Handholding can be a slightly different process where there may be step by step guidance till the learner becomes independent, but mentoring can be more subtle and can go on for much longer, extending beyond a specific task at hand.
The mentor is not directive, as a coach often is, nor does a mentor attempt to resolve emotional issues as a counsellor would. The mentoring relationship is based on mutual trust and confidence, respect and healthy communication. There is a regular exchange of ideas and goal setting, and progress is discussed from time to time. Ideas are initiated as much by the mentor as by the mentee. New solutions, new ways of thinking, out of the box approaches to the problem at hand, are some of the benefits that the mentee draws from the relationship.
Pharmawisdom provides an array of experienced mentors which can help create a culture of growth and a phalanx of good performers in any organization. The goals of mentoring and handholding can be many, depending on the needs of the mentee. The beauty of mentoring and handholding lies in the fact that it is completely need based and user driven, making the growth organic and natural, rather than an imposed top-down process.
